Bay of Islands Vacation Retreat
Fernbrook is a sixty five acre (27ha) property extending from the top of the hill known as Rangitane to a secluded beach on the edge of the bay. It is set aside as a sanctuary for the North Island Brown Kiwi, a unique, nocturnal, flightless bird, now seriously endangered. Aside from the Kiwi there is a wide variety of other bird life here.
The land is largely in native bush and is bounded by a stream and waterfall. Guests can walk for several hours on bush tracks including a walk to a look out at the top of the Rangitane hill. A reforestation programme with extensive planting of native trees is an ongoing project to encourage bird life.
The large garden round the house includes a pond and an olive grove, the source of our own olive oil. Guests are encouraged to make full use of the garden to relax, read, paint, bird watch or just gaze the view, camera in hand.
The beach at the bottom of the hill, ringed by red flowering pohutukawa trees is available to all our guests.
Fernbrook, the essence of tranquillity
Sustainable Tourism
Our Bay of Islands retreat uses solar power for all hot water heating. We have our own natural filtered water system, we grow most of our own vegetables using our own compost, we use our own olive oil, organically grown, and we belong to the Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter Project. We are dedicated to making our lifestyle at Fernbrook as ecologically sustainable as possible.
