Things to See & Do – Kerikeri & Bay of Islands

Fernbrook Beachfront Cottage and Apartment Accommodation is ideally placed to explore other areas of the Bay of Islands and further afield in Northland. Our nearest town, Kerikeri, has a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, gift shops, craft shops, art galleries and even an antique car museum. You can buy everything from possum fur and merino clothing to serious works of art. At Fernbrook we can advise you on places to dine, trips to take and things to see.

Attractions & Activities include:

  • Kiwi Viewing – kiwi can still be found in Northland and we organise night viewing Kiwi Viewing Tours exclusively for our guests to a special location where they can be seen feeding in their natural habitat. These tours are conducted by knowledgeable friends who pay particular attention to ensuring that the birds remain undisturbed.

  • The Kerikeri Mission House and Stone Store - a legacy from the missionary settlers of the 19th Century, the Stone Store having once been used to trade Kauri gum. Nearby is a model Maori Village. All are open daily to visitors.

  • Golf - Kauri Cliffs to the north and Waitangi to the south east are both outstanding examples of internationally recognised golf courses and are within easy driving distance from Fernbrook.

  • The Waitangi Treaty House commemorates the signing of a treaty in 1840 between the English Crown and the Maori people of New Zealand.

  • Paihia, Bay of Islands provides a wide variety of trips on the Bay including dolphin watching, kayaking, fishing and sailing. It is a short ferry ride from here to Russell, once the capital of New Zealand, now a quaint, historic seaside town.

  • Mangonui, a former whaling port to the north of Kerikeri is not only famous for its excellent fish and chips but also its interesting whaling museum. It can be reached by an outstanding coastal road with numerous small beaches, excellent swimming and delightful views at every turn.

  • The Farmers Market Kerikeri, held every Sunday morning, is a source of local produce such as citrus fruit, Kiwifruit, cheeses, olive oil, preserves and jams and a host of other goodies.

  • Art Galleries abound in Kerikeri. The sub tropical climate has attracted artists, potters and craftspeople of all kinds and there is some exceptional work to be found.

  • Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand can be reached by tour bus or by car. This is where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet; a spectacular sight.

We are happy to provide assistance and advice on all local sightseeing and tour options.
